KEY IDEAS

• The European Commission, the Republic of South Africa and Brazil committed to the deepening of the scientific cooperation (Belém Statement) with a vision of Building an All Atlantic Ocean Research Community
• Perceive the Atlantic Ocean as an invaluable shared resource with an enormous societal value for all countries located on its shores
• Recognise that, due to an increased global economy, the Atlantic Ocean is under great pressure from multiple sources
• Cooperation is key to manage the Atlantic Ocean as a whole in order to best unlock its secrets and to promote its sustainably
• The All Atlantic Ocean Research Community will be established by bringing together and systematically connect all relevant actors around the Atlantic Ocean (scientists, stakeholders, data, knowledge, expertise, capacities, and resources)
• To address the Atlantic Ocean grand challenges and opportunities, the Community will work together in identifying concrete collaborative research and innovation activities with a long-lasting potential and impact across a range of key areas
• Building on the many existing initiatives, the AANChOR H2020 project, currently the main instrument in supporting the implementation of the Belém Statement, will kick-off the coordination of efforts by launching a multi-stakeholder platform to reinforce international cooperation
