Bringing the Ocean to Society

Researchers from the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO, CSIC), the Center for Studies and Experimentation of Public Works (CEDEX) and the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITERD) have published a work in COSTAS journal in which they analyze how the tasks carried out in the different cross-border projects financed by the European Commission to support the maritime spatial planning process contribute to improving management in Spanish waters.
The work summarizes and reflects on how the marine spatial planning process is being carried out in Spain (methodology, agents involved and requirements), analyzes the capacities and results obtained through the different cross-border European spatial planning projects marina in which Spain has participated, and how these can be incorporated into the process on a national scale. To date, the IEO has participated in six European projects: TPEA, SIMWESTMED, SIMNORAT, MarSP, SIMAtlantic and MSPMED. In addition, a new project (MSPOR) is scheduled to start at the beginning of the last quarter of 2021, developed in the North Atlantic, Gulf of Cádiz, Western Mediterranean and Macaronesia regions.
